This week’s selection is “Painting Wargaming Figures” by Javier Gomez Valero.

Figurines are one of the most popular items made by home 3D printer operators. Since the availability of low-cost resin 3D printing equipment, this field has exploded. There are many very inexpensive devices on the market, along with accessible materials. There are even several 3D model online repositories that are more-or-less devoted to figurines.

There’s only one problem.

All of these resin 3D printers produce objects in only one color at a time, usually gray or white.

Figurines really need to be made with different colors, but that technology is currently priced out of almost everyone’s reach.

The alternative is to simply paint the mono-color 3D printed figurines. However, it turns out doing so requires some skills, equipment and patience.

This book focuses on painting figurines. While I’m pretty sure the book was based off the idea of buying pre-made figurines, the same painting processes will work with your own 3D printed figurines.

The author is a highly experienced figurine painter and takes the reader through his long-developed process. This includes selection of equipment and materials for painting, as well as the process.

Dry-brushing, ink-washing, shading and highlighting are among the techniques explained. It’s not at all as simple as painting a wall. There are many nuances required to create a painted figurine that visually represents a real figure.

The author covers techniques for painting figurines from a variety of historic periods, all accumulating your knowledge of how to handle different figurine situations.
