ISO/ASTM Releases Standards for Additive Manufacturing in Construction

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and ASTM International have jointly established standards for additive manufacturing in the construction sector. These standards are designed to guide the safe and effective use of robotic arms and additive manufacturing technologies in building construction.

A key aspect of this initiative is the ISO/TR 20218-1:2018, which offers guidance on the safe design and integration of end effectors for robots, particularly in collaborative applications where robots and humans share workspace. The standards emphasize the significance of safety assessments in such environments.

ISO and ASTM have published the ISO/ASTM 52939:2023 standard, marking their first joint standard. This standard specifically addresses qualification principles for structural and infrastructure elements in additive construction, covering various aspects from quality to system operations. It applies to both load-bearing and non-load-bearing structures in residential and commercial applications, excluding metals, material properties, operational safety, and specific robot operating guidelines.

This development is notable for its potential impact on traditional construction standards and practices. It sets a precedent for future construction robot standards across multiple organizations. The standard, however, is voluntary, and builders are advised to adhere to local and regional regulations.

The collaboration between ISO and ASTM sets a new standard (pun intended) for additive manufacturing in construction, focusing on safety, quality, and operational criteria. This initiative paves the way for further advancements in construction technology potentially transforming industry practices and contributing to sustainable development.
